Very rare and wonderful, 1880's Illustrated, American Broadside Advertising Sign / Rammie Paper “Japanese Napkin” Sheet advertising the Buffalo Fertilizer & Chemical Works of Buffalo, New York – manufacturers of Agricultural / Farm Fertilizers. This extensively illustrated Broadside Sheet features a wonderful image of an American Buffalo / Bison herd on the Western plains along with four birds-eye-views of the Buffalo Fertilizer & Chemical Works factories in Buffalo, New York (the Fertilizer Factory and the Chemical Factory), Louisville, Kentucky and Indianapolis, Indiana.
This very rare and fascinating, Broadside Advertising Sheet measures approx. 18 1/2" by 18 1/2" and printed on a very delicate fabric-type tissue material “manufactured from the Bark of the Rammie Plant”. There is a central image of a herd of Buffalo on the western plains and birds-eye-views of the four factory works of the Buffalo Fertilizer & Chemical Works – in Louisville, Indianapolis.
The Sheet is identified with text below the central image that reads “Japanese Napkin / Manufactured from the Bark of the Rammie Plant / A Japanese Root, and expressly imported for the Buffalo Fertilizer & Chemical Works”. Further text on the Sheet reads “Buffalo Fertilizer & Chemical Works / Buffalo, N. Y.”, “Ammoniated(sic) Bone Super- Phosphate / The Best and Most Reliable” and “Ground Bones Pure and Unadulterated”. The Broadside Sheet carries the mark of the printer – Cosack & Co., Lith. & Printers. Buffalo, N. Y.
As states above, the Broadside is printed on a delicate, fabric-like tissue material made from the bark of the Japanese Rammie Plant. It is called a “Japanese Napkin” and in made in the form of merchant store tissue used to wrap the goods sold in stores and boxed and taken from the store by customers. Given that the Buffalo Fertilizer & Chemical Works did not sell products found in a retail store, we assume that this was distributed as an Advertising piece and Broadside Advertisement.
This very rare and fascinating, Illustrated Advertising Broadside Sheet is in very good condition. The “Tissue” is very delicate yet the Sheet is intact with edge wear only. This edge wear appears to be an artifact of the manufacturing process of the Rammie Bark Paper sheet. There are some horizontal and vertical creases to the Sheet and some scattered light foxing but no other staining or soiling. Please see the scans below for a good indication of the content and condition of this fascinating Advertisinjg Broadside / Sheet.
